Italy Service Learning Trip 2011

Our service-learning trip to Italy is May 18-June 1. We hope that this blog will keep our family and friends informed of our work and travels.

Our team (7 Malone University students and 1 Geneva College student) is being led by Dr. Scott Waalkes & Michele Waalkes and Ann O. Lawson. Most of the team is staying at the Geneva College Semester in Rome facility. Our service projects are being organized by Agape Italia, affiliated with Campus Crusade for Christ. We will connect with refugees from Tunisia and Afghanistan who have fled violence and unrest.

• Thursday, May 19 overnight in Rome: estimated arrival in Rome 7:45am, get settled, rest, orientation

• Friday, May 20 overnight in Rome: Naples/Pompeii ruins

• Saturday, May 21 overnight in Rome: service project, Villa Borghese gardens, Spanish steps, Old Wall

• Sunday, May 22 overnight in Rome: church and service project. Romano: Palazzo Massimo alle Terme

• Monday, May 23 overnight in Rome: Colosseum, Palatine Hill, Trajanʼs Column, Forum, Arch of Titus, Arch of Constantine, Pantheon, churches around Pantheon, Trevi Fountain

• Tuesday, May 24 overnight in Rome: St. Peterʼs Basilica, Trastevere area, Jewish Ghetto

• Wednesday, May 25 overnight in Siena: travel to Siena, duomo (cathedral), baptistery, duomo museum, Piazza del Campo

• Thursday, May 26 overnight in Siena Florence: travel to Florence, duomo, baptistery, duomo museum, Uffizi gallery, Ponte Vicchio, Giardino di Boboli Gardens

• Friday, May 27 overnight in Rome Cinque Terre: travel to Monterosso, hike, train back to Monterosso, travel back to Rome

• Saturday, May 28 overnight in Rome: service project, Appian Way, catacombs

• Sunday, May 29 overnight in Rome: church, service project, *If time allows: Vatican Museum (otherwise on Tuesday, May 31)

• Monday, May 30 overnight in Rome: Castel Porziano beach (past Ostia Antica)

• Tuesday, May 31 overnight in Rome, service project, further explore city, shop for souvenirs

• Wednesday, June 1 depart   Rome to Newark 9:50a-1:30p    Newark to Cleveland 4:05p-5:39p
